The Five Levels of Autonomous SAP Operations
An original maturity framework — introduced in SAPInsider — that gives enterprises a shared vocabulary for measuring, and advancing, how autonomously their SAP landscapes operate. Modeled in the spirit of the SAE autonomous-driving levels, applied to enterprise operations.
Manual Operations
All administration, monitoring, and recovery performed by hand. Institutional knowledge lives in people, response is reactive, and outcomes vary with the operator on shift.
Assisted Operations
Tooling supports the operator: documented runbooks, scripted tasks, and monitoring dashboards reduce effort, but a human still initiates and supervises every action.
Partial Automation
Defined workflows — system copies, refreshes, failover tests — execute end-to-end without hands-on effort. Humans decide when; automation handles how.
Conditional Autonomy
The landscape self-manages within defined guardrails: automated responses to known conditions, policy-driven remediation, escalation to humans only at the edges.
High Autonomy
Self-healing operations across the landscape. Systems detect, decide, and recover on their own; humans provide oversight, governance, and exception handling.
Full Autonomy
Continuous, self-optimizing operations. The landscape maintains its own resilience posture, adapts to change, and improves over time — with humans setting intent, not executing tasks.
A shared measuring stick
Before this framework, "automation" in SAP operations meant something different to every vendor and every IT organization. The L0–L5 model gives CIOs, operations teams, and vendors a common language to assess where they are and plan where they're going.
In print and in practice
Introduced as a feature in SAPInsider, the framework anchors the forthcoming book Resilient by Design and informs delivery methodology across enterprise SAP engagements.
Resilient by Design
Resilient by Design: SAP Operations from Disaster Recovery to the Autonomous Landscape is a 15-chapter guide for the people who keep enterprise SAP systems running — architects, operations leaders, and CIOs responsible for landscapes where downtime is measured in dollars per minute.
The book traces the full arc of SAP operational maturity: from disaster recovery and high availability fundamentals, through system copy automation and data anonymization, to hybrid cloud resilience — culminating in the Five Levels of Autonomous SAP Operations and a practical roadmap toward the self-managing landscape.
The book is in development with SAP PRESS (Rheinwerk Publishing), the leading global publisher for SAP professionals.
